David Deutsch: What is our place in the cosmos?

July 3rd, 2009 by admin

www.ted.com Legendary scientist David Deutsch puts theoretical physics on the back burner to discuss a more urgent matter the survival of our species. The first step toward solving global warming, he says, is to admit that we have a problem.TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes — including speakers such as Jill Bolte Taylor, Sir Ken …

We’re not a miracle, we’re inevitable. In an ocean with guanine and adenine bumping into each other life is generated spontaneously. Then it has to evolve, right? It can’t stay the same, because there are mutations. Then it gets smart and builds shit to destroy everything. Life is so simple, they will figure that out, too.

i understand that perspective. Douglas Adams said that in an infinite universe it is not only likely but very probable that there exists a planet that only grows hammers and mattresses. Everything is inevitable. That can be either enlightening or depressing. I ask you this though, how does a lifeless element generate life?

I don’t know, but I think adenine and guanine and other things occur by accident and once in a while they create a cell. ATP synthase is just a dumb machine that occurs by accident. If it didn’t, it would be evidence of a miracle, which I haven’t seen anywhere else. I don’t beliieve the Universe is infinite, but I sure don’t understand it’s edges, or dark matter or quantum mechanics. There are probably countless other Universes outside ours, but who knows?

Viruses are just a dumb set of instructions, they aren’t even alive. If the instructions mutate and are insufficient, the virus disappears. Once in a great while a virus mutates and the instructions accidentally tell host cells to replicate it and you get a new flu.

Oh for the love of Christ. New age mumbo jumbo. I just want to hold this guy down and spray green antifreeze into his ass. Does this make me a bad person? Haha. I’m trying to change my ways. The prison makes us watch these videos so that we can assimulate back into society again. I just want to shave his head, tatoo his body and make him my metaphysical bitch okay. I would fuck him on a spaceship heading for the burning sun. Anyone care to meet up with me when I get out on parole? Haha.

well, traveling btween dimensions will b difficult in two ways-first the travel itself,then-you ll have to”hit”the xsact moment in that “other “dim you want to go to.imagine you travel in a fast train and you have to jump into another fast train, moving paralell to yours, but -in the opposite direction, and you must hit one particular open window in one particular waggon of this train..

the fact that our environment (Earth) supports our survival should, in itself, explain why we DONT live on Mars
the reason why a culture does not take root and multiply in an empty petri dish is because THERE IS NOT ENOUGH NUTRIENT TO SUPPORT THE CULTURES EVOLUTION.
    no nutrient = no cultures
Right David? stick to the physics… : )

    i joke, much respect :P

Problems are an opertunity to create knowledge, and knowledge is information that is useful; THANK YOU David. As to CO2 problem, I’m for greening the desert, whose with me?

  24. Comment by emphryio

People are afraid to talk much about fixing the problem through manipulating the environment because they think this will mean people won’t bother as much to stop doing the things which are causing the problem in the first place. Instead they’ll keep on destroying the environment while saying, “Oh but look, we don’t need to worry because we’re doing x, y, and z.” (With x, y and z likely being overhyped solutions that won’t actually really work anyway and amount to just being corporate PR.)

…but yes greening things is always good. I love verdancy anyway. Part of why I love the UK. :)
